► First report on delignification of paddy straw with Streptomyces griseorubens. ► High ligninase and low cellulase activity shown by S. griseorubens ssr38. ► High lignin break down evident from high lignin content in alkali extracts. ► Recovery of value-added lignin from the pretreated paddy straw samples. ► High saccharification efficiency 97.8% with actinomycete treated paddy straw.
