Abstract
► Methane production was inhibited at high total solids contents (>30%). ► Enrichment in Clostridium sp. was associated to low methanogenic activity. ► High specificity of archaeal population structures to TS contents was observed. ► Several bacterial and archaeal indicators of inhibited methanogenesis were identified.
