Abstract
► Free nitrous acid (FNA) treatment substantially increases sludge biodegradability. ► FNA at ppm levels is strongly biocidal for activated sludge. ► FNA at ppm levels can completely deactivate secondary sludge. ► Sludge treatment with FNA offers a potential technology for sludge reduction.
