Abstract
⺠Soluble TEP or polysaccharides determined membrane fouling in the MBRs. ⺠The initial cake layers could protect the primary membrane from soluble substances. ⺠The initial cake layers decreased zeta potential of the cleaned membranes. ⺠Hydroxyl and amide groups easily attached on the cleaned membranes.
