Abstract
► The effect of N2-flushing on acidogenic fermentation was studied. ► Experimental set-up with N2-flushing of the gas phase, non-directly affecting liquid phase, was developed. ► Headspace gas composition affected metabolic response. ► Hydrogen yield was increased by lowering its headspace partial pressure. ► Gas controlled fermentations are attractive for biorefinery process.
