Abstract
Proficiency in MATLAB is a common expectation for control and systems engineering, but the assessment of this can be time consuming and expensive. This paper reviews some of the ideas in the literature for improving the efficiency and efficacy of the assessment practices and proposes what might be considered a relatively radical approach which is far more efficient, for the academic, in general.
