Abstract
The definition of a sound taxonomy of manufacturing systems can be the foundation of many different manufacturing applications supported by information technology. Leveraging the object-oriented approach, numerous proposals for manufacturing systems ontologies have been made in the past. However, in the authors' opinion, a comprehensive definition of all aspects related to a manufacturing system entity structure is still missing. Toward this end, a new proposal is presented in which three different layers (related to the physical, technological and control aspects, respectively) are defined.
