Abstract

In terms of impact on driving, typologies of automation have sometimes distinguished between quite coarse levels of the driving task, have tended not to focus specifically on the interaction between automation and the precise task being taken over by an automated system. An experiment in the UK project EASY allows an examination of the impact of automated support on different elements in vehicle control. Which aspect of vehicle control that was substituted, longitudinal or lateral control, had an impact on operator engagement in the driving task.
