Abstract
Energy efficiency has been demonstrated to be the largest and cheapest energy option by increasingly numerous studies. But renewable energy has dropped in price dramatically, causing some analysts to question the priority value of efficiency compared with renewables. This paper discusses the societal cost of efficiency compared to renewables, and the synergistic effects that enhanced efficiency can have in incorporating a large percentage of renewables into the electric grid at the lowest cost.
