Abstract

The intelligent control system INCA combines signals from multiple incident detection and state estimation algorithms for dynamical regulation of highway traffic using variable speed/information displays. We show that INCA is capable of inferring an optimal weighting scheme for achieving performance improvements by integration of the traffic reconstruction algorithm AZTEK. A high weighting of AZTEK appears to be associated with adequate data quality, consistent with theoretical expectations. In cases of excellent traffic data quality, there is a significant performance improvement associated with integration of AZTEK compared to conventional incident detection algorithms.
