Abstract
The main goal of this work was to evaluate the quality of the solutions obtained with the PSO (Particle Swarm Optimization) for some linear acoustic problems. The implemented version of this algorithm is described step by step in the paper and the problems analyzed involve parametric optimization of mufflers and shape optimization of acoustic horns. The Finite Element Method (FEM) was employed in these two applications for the calculation of acoustic parameters used in the evaluation of the objective function value. Some results illustrated in this work indicate that the PSO is a very appealing method for situations where there are multiple solutions or when the number of design variables is large.
