Vehicle mass directly affects driving/braking demands as well as vehicle active control. This paper proposed a method for vehicle mass estimation based on high-frequency-information extraction, which only uses the information of longitudinal force and acceleration. First, a high-pass filter is designed to extract high-frequency-information of longitudinal driving force and acceleration. Then, recursive least square algorithm is implemented to estimate vehicle mass. Both simulation and experimental results show that the novel method can estimate vehicle mass accurately. Particularly, this method takes obvious advantages over other approaches: (1) decoupled estimation of vehicle mass and road grade, (2) minimized dependency on sensor-based information, (3) fast convergence of estimated result and reliable robustness.
