New relations, methods and opportunities in manufacturing and industrial engineering have emerged in response to major challenges in recent decades, leveraging results from multi-disciplinary approaches. We review the evolution, comparing past predictions with the current accomplishments and frontiers in this area. The presentation focuses on manufacturing network paradigms, strategic and global influences, cyber-supported analytics and informatics, and collaborative control for automation, robotics, and decision support. Case studies illustrated draw from recent progress in manufacturing factories and processes, facility sensor networks, and supply decision networks. Future challenges and open questions for next generation manufacturing engineers, managers and researchers are also suggested.
