Abstract
Mechanics, as a discipline, plays a well-established, foundational role in manufacturing, where the traditional emphasis is on analysis for optimization of materials choices or process selections. This perspective presents an alternative view in which insights from mechanics are essential to fundamentally new approaches in manufacturing, referred to here as extreme manufacturing. Selected highlights provide examples of the exciting opportunities and challenges associated with this emerging field.
