Abstract
This paper presents a unifying classification of energy efficiency in terms of performance, operation, equipment, and technology (POET); and it further explores the analogies and relationships with the general framework of control systems. As a typical demand side management problem, the cruise control of heavy haul trains is re-examined from the POET perspective, illustrating the feasibility and the potential of a control engineering approach to energy efficiency and demand side management.
