Abstract

This paper deals with the modeling and the identification of an electromechanical Diesel engine actuator. The SAIA-Burgess actuator, studied in this work, is in charge of the control of the coolant flow passing through an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) cooler. This study aims to design a complete simulator that accurately predicts the actuator dynamics taking into account the effects of friction phenomenon. An overview of the actuator structure and its operation principle is first given. Then, its mathematical model as well as the nonlinearity, related to its behavior, are generally discussed. A step-by-step identification procedure is subsequently introduced allowing the estimation of both the system parameters and the friction model coefficients. Finally, Simulation results, using Matlab-Simulink, and experimental results, using LabVIEW and CompactRIO, are presented showing that the developed simulator is able to accurately reproduce the actuator dynamics.
