Abstract

- Ballistic performances of AlN/Al5083 and Al2O3/Al5083 armor configurations have been compared.
- Backing plate deformation of AlN/Al5083 is much less than that of Al2O3/Al5083 armor.
- Finite element simulation has been validated with experiment.
- Performance of AlN is higher due to higher shear strength and Hugoniot elastic limit of AlN than that of Al2O3.
