Abstract
⺠A reliability assessment of the hull girder of an oil tanker ship is presented. ⺠A new Monte Carlo based simulation method is combined with a progressive collapse method. ⺠Ultimate collapse and local failure of the midship cross section are considered. ⺠The local failure mode is formulated as a large system reliability problem. ⺠The variability in the material properties and structural dimensions is explicitly accounted for.
