Abstract
This paper suggests a basis for teaching English to engineering students. The authors focus on how teachers can foster their students to be excellent engineers. Therefore, the pedagogic points come not from general English but from English for a specific purpose. Competences demanded on engineers are discussed and a possible approach to teaching not only English, but also overall communication competence to engineering students is suggested.
