Abstract
In this paper we discuss the role of design in tertiary education linked to professional practice. We give particular emphasis to control engineering. We argue that such education is made more interesting and relevant if it is linked to real world experiences. We point to one mechanism for giving students exposure to real world designs via the use of Virtual Laboratories.
