Abstract
The operation of an anaerobic digestion located on a farm and subject to variable inputs, has been simulated using the Anaerobic Digestion Model 1. Different hydrolysis rates are assumed for carbohydrates, proteins and lipids, depending upon the nature of the substrate (activated sludge, cow slurry, cow manure, biodiesel waste (glycerol), used cooking oil). Inhibition due to the presence of an antibiotic is included. Tests of controlled addition of external substrates such as biodiesel waste or oil to sustain the methane production have shown that glycerol was easier to manage than oil.
