Abstract
This study proposes a design and evaluation method of lane change guidance system for freeway incident management. Microscopic simulator VISSIM is used to facilitate the design and evaluation. Sixteen incident scenarios are used with four varying factors: demanding flow, incident duration, incident location and driver compliance rate. The average number of stops per vehicle and the average speed from one-hour simulation runs are recorded as performance measures to evaluate the effectiveness of the lane change guidance system. The results show that the lane change guidance system has positive impact on the environment and safety for certain traffic conditions.
