In this paper we present a new approach to road network representation for the purpose of monitoring and controlling traffic. The new approach based on so-called mainlinks and accessorlinks uses a distributed architecture. To generate the network representation automatically, a software generator is presented in this paper. The software generator reads from the detailed Dutch road network database, which is an ideal data source containing all the necessary information of road segments. After the network representation is generated, the software stores the data in a MySQL database which can be used to create the link and junction objects and to visualize the road network automatically. The representation is used in traffic control software at the Dutch traffic management company Trinité Automatisering B.V.
