Abstract
The paper describes a research of smoke elimination and confinement with different kinds of air curtain at the stairwell entrance. A 1:12 small-scale model experiment was conducted and a complementary Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) simulation was performed on a full scale station. Research indicated the vents influenced the efficacy of smoke confinement and the comprehensive efficacy of multi-stream and opposite vents was the best. In fire design, a bigger velocity may not mean better efficacy and an appropriate velocity should be proposed to keep the least smoke at the whole fire process.
