Abstract

This study investigated the use of a driving simulator as effective method of driver instruction for the elderly, with particular emphasis on assisting participants to become aware of their driving problems by themselves. Five types of instruction method were compared, including the use of a rear-end accident scenario, the replay of a participant's driving from 2- or 3-dimensional bird's-eye view, as well as oral explanation. The results indicated that driving instruction using the collision scenario had the greatest effect on maintaining a safe distance from the preceding vehicle for the elderly drivers, while the 2D bird's-eye replay was most affected for younger drivers. The most effective method of instruction may depend on age.
