Small molecule detection in solution via the size contraction response of aptamer functionalized nanoparticles

We report the development of a new aptasensor scheme for detecting small molecules in solution. We detect binding to the target 17β-estradiol in the low nanomolar range by observing changes in the size and surface potential of nanoparticle-aptamer conjugates when the aptamers adopt a folded conformation around the target.
