Abstract
The operation of future power systems will be more challenging and demanding than present systems owning to increased uncertainties (renewables, dispersed generation), less inertia in the system, replacement of centralized coordinating activities by decentralized parties and the reliance on dynamic markets for both power balancing and system reliability/security. The paper presents the concept of Autonomous Networks to cope with this increased complexity while enhancing market-based operation. Power balance problem and system reliability through provision of ancillary services are formulated as an optimisation problem for the overall autonomous networks based power system.
