Oil refineries, petrochemicals, chemicals, pulp and paper, primary metal industries, power generations, gas plant and some others are the main players in process industries where thousands of control loops are installed at one single site. Demands to increase the effectiveness of implementation and operation in process industries, where classical and advanced control techniques are diversified in applied techniques and require multi-disciplinary domain knowledge, raise new challenges for both educational institutions and practitioners. This paper outlines in brief recently developed process control techniques and discusses the increasing need for providing practical control courses to engineers in process industries. A suggestion on suitable content for practical process control courses is also given.
