Abstract
► It presents a simple framework for thinking about the determinants of identity. ► It uses data from the British Citizenship Survey to investigate the empirical factors associated with identity. ► Religion and ethnicity are not found to be very important. ► People who feel they are treated with respect are more likely to identify with feeling part of Britain. ► We argue this supports ideas of reciprocity found in other areas of economics.
