Abstract
⺠It presents a simple framework for thinking about the determinants of identity. ⺠It uses data from the British Citizenship Survey to investigate the empirical factors associated with identity. ⺠Religion and ethnicity are not found to be very important. ⺠People who feel they are treated with respect are more likely to identify with feeling part of Britain. ⺠We argue this supports ideas of reciprocity found in other areas of economics.
