Abstract
Defining the defense mechanisms and their functions in experiences of depersonalization is at odds with a deficit-related conception of the phenomenon, associating it with loss of bearings or loss of the ability to synthesize the self. The different forms of splitting in the subject leading to the experience of depersonalization - split identity, body-psyche dissociation, etc. - require consideration of both subjective experience and distinct defensive functions.
