It is important to extract grains topography from a grinding wheel for the wheel functional performance predicting. This paper presents a method to extract the diamond grains and reconstruct their topography from a resinoid bonded wheel. To build the topography, this method uses the positions of peak intensities of all pixels intensity curves drawn according to the images captured by a CCD in a White Light Interferometry (WLI)-based vertical scanning system. And the extraction of the grains is undertaken by utilizing the magnitudes of the peak intensities. Experiments indicate that the magnitudes of the peak intensities are useful for wheel grains’ topography extracting.
► The emphasis is on extracting grain before reconstructing its topography. ► The extraction uses magnitude of peak intensity omitted in WLI instruments. ► The reconstruction is based on traditional White Light Interferometry (WLI). ► The extraction can avoid complicated algorithms in commercial instruments.
