Abstract
► A modified RK paradigm was used to examine subjective awareness during retrieval. ► Know response proportions underestimated the influence of generation on familiarity. ► A new RK measure demonstrated strong generation effects for both R and K responses. ► Recognition memory performance was above chance under claimed null awareness. ► Memory performance was qualitatively different as a function of claimed awareness.
