► Face recognition was tested following happy-, sad-, and neutral-mood induction. ► Sad participants were more accurate than happy and sad participants. ► Sad participants gave more remember responses. ► These results were only obtained under incidental learning conditions. ► Mood affects the amount of elaborative processing employed.
