Abstract
⺠The visual cortex is activated by sound and touch in early blind subjects. ⺠In the early blind, the occipital cortex is largely multisensory. ⺠Cortical development seems to overlay modal responses on “visual” structures. ⺠Visual brain areas assume their original role for nonvisual senses in the blind.
