Abstract
The dither method in connection with averaging is widely used to improve the resolution of analog/digital converters. It is often difficult to describe the improvement of the method quantitatively. The paper proposes a simple parameter Qeff to make this possible. It is suitable for measuring a steady component. The resolution improvements are introduced and described by example of sinus and triangle dither waveforms and various averager degrees. The necessary frequency conditions are termed. The parameter “Qeff” is shown to be dependent of dither-signal parameters like amplitude and phase.
