Abstract
⺠Automatic categorisation of faces is required to experience the Thatcher illusion. ⺠Discrimination of Thatcher from typical faces is different to perceiving the oddity. ⺠Absence of configural processing prevents categorisation of Thatcherised faces. ⺠Absence of configural processing has some implications for processing facial emotions.
