Abstract
► The syllable frequency effect is examined during reading using ERPs in French. ► Items with a syllable of high frequency elicit a weaker P200 and a larger N400. ► The N400 effect ensues from frequency distribution of the syllabic neighbours. ► The results constrain current accounts of syllabic effects in reading.
