Abstract

A simple characterization of the polarization state of partially polarized beams is proposed on the basis of the Stokes parameters expressed in terms of the radial and azimuthal components of the field at each point of the beam cross-section. The main properties of the proposed Stokes representation are also shown, and its physical meaning is discussed.
