► A unique exploration of differences in youth drinking cultures in northeast and southeast England. ► The paper focuses on the lives of 15-16 year olds. ► The research established social practices were played out against different opportunities and constraints. ► In the southeast young people had less exposure to alcohol related leisure and much greater opportunity for alternative activities. ► Study concludes the social aspect of alcohol is drawn from multiple sources that go beyond the influence of immediate contacts.
