Abstract
► This study finds peer effects in adolescent BMI using a sample from rural China. ► The peer effects in adolescent BMI are stronger for girls than for boys. ► The influence of same-gender peers is significant for girls but not for boys. ► Policies aiming at reducing underweight may be more effective in girls. ► Policies battling overweight or obesity may be more effective in boys.
