Abstract
► Doctors and patients make more accurate inferences when risks are communicated in natural frequencies than probabilities. ► Visual aids improve accuracy even when risks are provided in natural frequencies. ► Differences in accuracy between doctors and patients disappear when differences in levels of numeracy are controlled for. ► Our findings suggest suitable ways to communicate quantitative medical data.
