Abstract

Two fiber displacement sensors are investigated and used in many areas. A significant improvement in the performance is expected if the transmitting and the receiving fibers are mounted in inclined fashion instead of keeping them parallel to each other. This paper describes the simulation and experimental studies of the effect of angle between transmitting fiber and receiving fiber on the performance of the displacement sensor. The mathematical model for the inclined two fiber intensity-modulated displacement sensor is developed and simulated responses are studied. The obtained simulated response is then verified experimentally. The dependences of performance metrics such as blind region, linear operation range and sensitivity on the angle between transmitting fiber and receiving fiber is reported.
