Abstract
- Prior to the election, opposition parties requested limiting presidential tenure to two terms.
- Unlike in nearby Burkina Faso, there was no capitulation to protesters calling on the president to not seek a third term.
- Incumbent Faure Gnassingbé won with 59% of the vote, extending his family's 48-year tenure to 2020.
- Voter turnout and the ruling party's vote share have declined only slightly since the last presidential election in 2010.
