► MA's definition and classification of services may not be the most appropriate for monetary assessments. ► We explore the potential problems of using different ecosystem services classifications. ► We identify service overlapping and service ambiguity as the main causes for double-counting. ► Our analysis supports output-based classifications for economic valuation.
