Abstract
⺠We aim to identify potential policy development pathways to reduce urban air pollution and emissions of air pollutants and greenhouse gases. ⺠We use the BRUTAL sub-model of the UK Integrated Assessment Model to investigate alternative air pollution abatement strategies in road transport. ⺠Strategies include downsizing of cars, switching from petrol to diesel, and the introduction of electric, bio-fuelled or hydrogen vehicles. ⺠We discuss life-cycle impacts, implications for infrastructure, and potential impacts upon emissions from other sectors. ⺠We show that although the direct effectiveness of a strategy is crucial, the full life-cycle and cross-sectoral impacts must be considered.
