Abstract
- This study presents the first comprehensive analysis of climate regulating ecosystem services in more than 300 European cities.
- We show that cities depend on ecosystem services provided by their hinterlands to meet the demand of their inhabitants.
- Planning culture and historical development are one of the main drivers for today's ecosystem services provisioning in cities.
- Compact cities, although favoured in planning, are not necessarily optimal performers in ecosystem services provisioning.
