Abstract
► Very hard drinking water results in high environmental impacts in households. ► Central softening at waterworks changes the environmental impacts. ► For the first time these changes were assessed by applying Life cycle assessment. ► Environmental impacts were assessed for two levels of softening in Copenhagen. ► It was environmentally beneficial to reduce hardness as little as 22 mg/L as CaCO3.
