Abstract
⺠Very hard drinking water results in high environmental impacts in households. ⺠Central softening at waterworks changes the environmental impacts. ⺠For the first time these changes were assessed by applying Life cycle assessment. ⺠Environmental impacts were assessed for two levels of softening in Copenhagen. ⺠It was environmentally beneficial to reduce hardness as little as 22 mg/L as CaCO3.
