Abstract
► Travel behaviour research can benefit from conceptualisations of habit from beyond psychology. ► Habit is more than automatically cued repetition; it is a propulsive, generative tendency. ► Behaviour change is about working with rather than against existing habits. ► Breaking high-carbon habits necessitates durable changes to socio-technical systems. ► The rise of low-carbon habits and spontaneity within high-carbon habits need to be fostered.
