Abstract
This paper presents theoretical and exploratory research whose aim is to propose a generic model of scientific information management for research institutes based on principles of scientific communication and open access. The mixed methodological approach adopts the concurrent triangulation strategy. Data collected using questionnaires, interviews and checklists were subjected to statistical and text analyses. In addition to collecting and analyzing empirical data, the study also presents an examination of the literature on communications and information management models. The object of study consisted of scientists associated with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation; and the sample was acquired using intentional, non‐probabilistic sampling of researchers of the Brazilian Centre for Physics Research and the Museum of Astronomy and Related Sciences. The study concludes with a generic model of scientific information management for research institutes built on the basis of scientific communication and open access to texts and graphical elements. In the model, the information input and output flows are systemized through scientific information management processes. Beyond imbedding keys, the structure approaches the research institute domain as an open system in which scientific information flows. The model proposed also offers flexible elements representing institutional and disciplinary particularities that vary depending on the context of each research institute. This set of elements and their interrelationships are, broadly speaking, under the constant influence of forces arising from the scientific community
