Abstract
Reviewing the historical development to represent a compound, in this case benzene, displays the different theories that struggled to give the best explanations, showing a dynamic vision for the scientific knowledge construction. The elemental composition and the establishment of the empirical formula, the recognition of isomers, the chemical reactivity, the availability of new technological devices and chemical bond theories (the structural theory, atomic theories, valence bond theory and molecular orbital theory) are the main factors that influenced knowledge about the structure of benzene. This work can be useful in teachers' training and perhaps enlightens on some students learning difficulties. This also is a useful model for future research that teachers can develop with their students including the meta-scientific knowledge actively in the classroom.
